TROME help

The next trains do not show on your lock screen, or their minutes stop moving? iOS calls this display a Live Activity.

Find your case below: most take a few taps to fix. Want to know why TROME asks for Always location or for notifications? Read what TROME asks of the iPhone.

If nothing works, write to me at contact@trome.valfur.fr. I am Valentin Furmanek, and I make TROME.

  • Check that Live Activities are allowed. Open Settings > Apps > TROME, and turn on Live Activities.
  • Check that TROME can use your location. Without it, TROME cannot tell which station you are near. Open Settings > Apps > TROME > Location, and choose Always or While Using the App. Precise Location must also be on: see why.
  • Go near a station. The Live Activity starts about 150 meters from a metro or RER station. It ends when you move more than 250 meters away, or 45 minutes after it started.
  • Check that the automatic mode is on. Open TROME: if Automatic mode is off, turn it on. If it says Snoozed, tap Cancel the snooze, or wait until the time that it shows.

The Live Activity shows on the lock screen and in the Notification Center, and in the Dynamic Island on an iPhone that has one.

TROME does not start near a station, or picks the wrong station

Section titled “TROME does not start near a station, or picks the wrong station”

Open Settings > Apps > TROME > Location, and turn on Precise Location.

With approximate location, iOS does not let an app watch for your arrival near a place. The Live Activity may then not start by itself, and the nearest station may be the wrong one.

With TROME open, the Live Activity shows as soon as you come near a station. With TROME closed, you get a notification with the name of the station, for example “Châtelet”: tap it to show the Live Activity.

To get this notification, TROME needs two permissions, in Settings > Apps > TROME:

  • Location set to Always. With While Using the App, no notification comes when TROME is closed. Why Always?
  • Notifications turned on. Why notifications?

You get one notification for each arrival. During a snooze, nothing starts: see what the snooze and the pause do.

When the Live Activity has no recent times, its minutes disappear and it says “Open the app”. This happens when iOS stops TROME in the background, or when the iPhone has no internet.

Open TROME: the app asks for new times at once. If nothing changes, check that the iPhone is connected to the internet. Away from Wi-Fi, see also cellular data.

Open Settings > Apps > TROME, and turn on Cellular Data.

Without it, TROME cannot ask for new times when the iPhone is not on Wi-Fi. Then open TROME: the app asks for new times at once.

TROME can ask for train times a limited number of times each day, and all its users share this limit. When many people use it at the same time, the limit can be reached. The Live Activity then shows this message, and the app says No live times until around 2:59 PM, with the time of the next try.

The minutes already shown keep counting down until the first train leaves. You have nothing to do: TROME asks for the times again by itself, at the time that the app shows. In the meantime, trust the platform screen.

This message also shows when TROME could not get the times of the station yet, for example with no internet: check that the iPhone is connected.

This version of TROME can no longer get the times. Update TROME in the App Store, or in TestFlight if you test it, then open it. Until then, the Live Activity and the app show this message, with an orange icon, in place of the times.

The wait is not the same as on the platform screen

Section titled “The wait is not the same as on the platform screen”

TROME shows the wait in whole minutes, worked out from the last times it got. Between two updates, a train can run early or late, and at busy times the times that TROME gets can be a few minutes old. So a gap of a minute or two with the platform screen is normal: when in doubt, trust the platform screen.

With Always, iOS tells TROME when you come near a station, even when the app is closed.

With While Using the App, TROME knows your position only while the app is open.

The app sends your position to nobody. The privacy policy says what it does with it.

While the Live Activity shows, TROME follows your position, to switch to the next station and to stop when you leave. The iPhone shows this with a location arrow in the status bar, and, with While Using the App, with a blue indicator. With Always, a hollow arrow can also stay on outside the Live Activity: iOS shows that TROME is waiting for you to come near a station. When you come near a station, the arrow can also stay on for up to 2 minutes, while TROME checks that you are there. This is normal.

What the automatic mode, the snooze and the pause do

Section titled “What the automatic mode, the snooze and the pause do”

The automatic mode shows the Live Activity when you come near a station, and removes it when you leave: the distances are above. When you turn it off, the Live Activity ends at once and nothing starts until you turn it on again.

Snooze stops TROME for every station, for 30 minutes, 1 hour or the rest of the day. The Live Activity ends at once, and no notification or automatic start comes before the time of return that the app shows. The automatic mode stays on. The 30 min, 1 h and Today buttons of the Live Activity on the lock screen, and Not for 1 h and Not today on the notification, do the same. To start again sooner, tap Cancel the snooze.

The pause is for one station only. When you swipe the Live Activity away, it does not come back at this station for 1 hour. The app then says “Paused at Châtelet until 3:51 PM”, and Cancel the pause at Châtelet puts it back at once.

They tell you that you are near a station when TROME is closed. Without them, the Live Activity shows when you open TROME near a station.

TROME asks for notifications only after the location, and only once.

See an example puts Châtelet on the lock screen for 10 minutes, with sample times, so that you can try TROME outside Paris. These are not real trains: the app says “example” as long as it shows.

To reach me, write to contact@trome.valfur.fr. TROME is a free app: I answer when I can, and I promise no delay.

If you have a free GitHub account, you can also open an issue with one of these forms. The question form is in French and English, the other two are in English, and you can write in French in all three.

To help me find the cause quickly, tell me the model of your iPhone, its iOS version, the station, and what you see. A screenshot helps a lot: first check that it shows nothing personal.

An issue is public, and everyone can read it. Do not write your name, your email address, or where you live in it.

A security problem, for example a way to learn where someone is? Do not write it in a public issue: send it in private. SECURITY.md says what to put in it.
